Through her sculptural installations, she crafts a narrative that breathes life into extinct creatures and otherworldly beings. The tension between the artificial and the natural is a prominent feature of her work, creating an initial sense of dismay that gradually gives way to feelings of tenderness, sensitivity, and even humor. The installation functions as a unique ecosystem, prompting questions about existence and encouraging the audience to reconsider their relationship with the environment. Made from scrap wood and paper, these forms conjure a loop in time, both future and past, both dead and showing the soft blush of life. She was inspired by the phenomena of “Whalefall” when a whale dies and sinks slowly to the bottom of the ocean, becoming a host for a diversity of other lifeforms, some of which exist in no other place on earth. If only we as humans can find a way to leave as gracefully. Some species, each with their unique qualities, have served as emblems of eternity in our journey to grasp the elusive concept of everlasting existence. One such species is the hydrozoan Turritopsis dohrnii, known for the ability to reverse its life cycle. It has been dubbed the immortal jellyfish. Once you enter, you are reminded of the lives about to start in the marsh outside. Inside are creatures that look as if they are just on the brink of becoming. They are familiar and strange simultaneously, bringing you an uncanny feeling, a vague memory that your body might just remember from when it too was at this strange cusp of life. In the exhibition Possible Oddkin, Brák Jónsdóttir explores and blurs the boundaries between mind, body and environment. Pondering the commonalities of greenhouses and nature reserves as man-made spaces for exploring and conditioning life, spaces meant for some kind of reproduction. Plucking strings from these thoughts, tracing them and braiding, Brák weaves a story of possible worlds and futures. A story that challenges traditional ideas of mating and kinship. In hopes of daring visitors to rethink their own relationships with the world and all its beings. The exhibition draws on the artist’s research into how the body interacts with plants and vegetation. Brák plays with common concepts within everyday gardening practice: harnessing nature and controlling growth inside. The exhibition also expands its reaches into the garden: a territory which is both natural and man-made. Inside, hanging on the walls, are gardening tools, or are they toys? It is hard to distinguish, but perhaps the two are not mutually exclusive. Out in the garden someone has been diligent in the flowerbed, which looks like it might bear an odd fruit. In the artist’s research earth is given the role of the submissive, in a game where the gardener caresses it and carefully pushes its boundaries. The game’s arena is determined by the submissive but the rules are set by the master. Passionately, the artist tries to penetrate deeper, deeper into the earth. Respect, intimacy and responsibility are an essential part of this power play which requires care for the subject. The game creates a blushing tension when both players' boundaries are stretched to their limits. The philosophies behind the fetishistic and sexual cultures Brák refers to in her works are built on strong and meaningful aesthetic values that she lets spread into the well known imagery of gardening, activating it and invoking said tension. This carnal investigation begets results that challenge conventional ideas of relationships, humanity and nature, resulting in the blurring of lines between the boundaries of the body and its environment. Dýpra | Deeper exhibits many clues as to what these results might be, allowing the viewer to fill in the gaps. The sculptures are comprised of a blushing tension between pain and pleasure, natural and man-made materials. I strive to look for a way to be at one with the world and sometimes find it in the gap between the imaginary and the real, by intertwining the portals of reality and fantasy. It feels right to me that art and life should merge into one inseparable whole and thus my works inevitably have a direct connection to my emotional life and worldly multiplicity: they are a reflection of my inner and outer self. I want to feel the intimacy of the universe, similar to the intimacy we experience in amorous relationships.
